From the termination of use in August 2021 till now, the “retired” Qingdao Liuting Airport made a “comeback” in an unusual manner. The Qingdao Action Airport Music Festival, China’s first airport music festival staged on a parking apron, recently made a brilliant appearance in the airport, attracting the participation of 36 music performers at home and abroad and 60,000 music fans.

The Liuting Airport was brimming with youth and excitement. When musicians came on stage amid familiar melodies, the offstage audience burst into a chorus or cheered loudly from time to time.

Apart from music enthusiasts who were from Qingdao or the surrounding areas in Shandong Province, many audiences travelled across over half of China to the site. In the music festival, music fans could travel around the mouth-watering delicacy area and fairs with a dazzling array of beautiful things in the intervals of music performance, comparable to a happy carnival.

Reportedly, the Qingdao Liuting Airport, after the official shutdown in August 2021, has played different roles, for example making appearance successively in such films as the Wandering Earth 2 and Home Coming. As China’s first airport music festival kicked off, Qingdao will launch music festivals of different themes from June to September and build in Liuting Airport a cultural tourism cluster area featuring “terminal building-themed film and TV+music+entertainment shows+exhibitions”.
