The inaugural 2026 Asia-Pacific Fall Transnational Bridge Championships kicked off on Nov 1 in Qingdao, Shandong province, drawing more than 68 teams representing 20 countries and regions.

The seven-day tournament, held at Qingdao Haitian Hotel, has welcomed 400 professional players and bridge enthusiasts of all ages, genders, and nationalities until Nov 7.

Modeled on major European bridge competitions, the championships feature three events: Open Teams, Swiss Cup Teams, and Board-a-Match Open Teams. Participants can form their own teams and choose which events to enter.

Franck Riehm, president of the World Bridge Federation, was among the officials attending the opening ceremony.

The tournament adds to Qingdao's growing reputation as a host of major bridge competitions, with the coastal city having previously staged international events, including the Buffett Cup, as well as national bridge tournaments.

Qingdao has also stepped up efforts to promote bridge among young people, helping expand participation and develop a new generation of players.
