Qingdao is stepping up the green transformation of its port sector, with a new three-year action plan focusing on cleaner power, hydrogen applications and alternative marine fuels.

The Qingdao Port Green Transformation Action Plan (2026-28), unveiled at a municipal government briefing on Sept 21, sets out 17 key tasks covering energy supply, port operations, transport links and digital management.

A major focus is increasing the port's ability to generate and use green electricity. Qingdao Port currently has 14 megawatts of distributed photovoltaic capacity, with another 26 MW planned or under construction. Three wind turbines with a combined capacity of 20 MW are also being developed at the Qianwan port area. Once completed, these projects are expected to generate more than 60 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

Cleaner equipment is also becoming increasingly common across the port. More than 200 new-energy mobile machines are in operation, while about 819 electric heavy-duty trucks now account for over 80 percent of such vehicles operating within the port.

Qingdao Port has also expanded its hydrogen use and green fuel bunkering. It operates China's first hydrogen refueling station at a port and has established regular green methanol bunkering services.

By 2028, the port aims to further expand shore power, renewable electricity and cleaner equipment, while strengthening its green energy supply. By 2030, it plans to further increase energy self-sufficiency and reduce the carbon intensity of port operations.
