On April 22, a massive new coffee production center in Chengyang district, Qingdao, with a total investment of 3 billion yuan ($443.28 million) and an annual roasting capacity exceeding 55,000 metric tons, officially began operations.
The facility, built to China's highest green building standards, represents the largest single investment in China's coffee industry. By leveraging Qingdao Port — the largest coffee bean import gateway in northern China — the "port-to-plant" model significantly shortens the time from global estates to Chinese consumers.
Just one day earlier, German listed company ElringKlinger opened its Asia headquarters for high-performance materials in the Qingdao Sino-German Ecopark. Within just two years, the company had registered locally, ramped up its output value to 150 million yuan in 2025, and quadrupled its production capacity. "We will continue to invest in Qingdao and work to build a local R&D center," said Dirk Willers, a board member of ElringKlinger.
From a single German firm to a cluster of high-level foreign investments, Qingdao is reshaping its industrial landscape.
German chemical giant LANXESS has operated a rubber R&D center here since 2008, while global industrial measurement leader Hexagon has made Qingdao its Asia manufacturing hub. AstraZeneca has tripled its investment in Qingdao to $886 million over the past three years.
Beyond manufacturing, Qingdao is expanding institutional openness.
New customs measures allow exported auto parts to be returned for inspection and repair within bonded zones, significantly lowering after-sales costs. The first "TIR + bonded" cross-border e-commerce import shipment has also cleared customs in Qingdao, enabling goods to enter a bonded zone without immediate tariff payment. Qingdao's growing role as a trade facilitator and rule-maker — including the drafting of international standards for port automation — is quietly redefining the city's position in global trade.

From global investment to institutional innovation, Qingdao steers toward a new horizon of high-standard opening-up. [Photo/Guanhai News]
