Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport wrapped up its busiest Spring Festival travel season on record, handling 3.06 million passengers from Feb 2 to March 13 — a 6 percent increase from the previous year and the first time surpassing the 3 million mark during this period. The airport operated 21,000 flights and processed 23,000 metric tons of cargo.
Passenger traffic peaked on Feb 23, reaching 90,000 travelers in one day — an all-time high. Daily averages were around 76,000, with 12 days exceeding 80,000.
The extended holiday drove strong demand for domestic and international routes. Key domestic routes to cities like Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen saw increased frequencies, while new destinations such as Yichun, Shashi, and Enshi were added. International travel also surged, with Southeast Asian routes growing 77 percent year-on-year. Flights to Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore now operate nearly daily.
To handle the rush, Qingdao airport made dynamic service adjustments — opening more security lanes during peak hours and providing targeted help for late passengers through its "urgent passenger tracking platform". Ground transportation links improved, allowing easy transfers via subway, high-speed rail, and ride-hailing services.
Cargo operations kept pace with holiday demand by prioritizing fresh produce and time-sensitive goods through dedicated green channels.
During this year's travel rush, Qingdao airport introduced tailored services for different passenger groups. For elderly travelers, senior-friendly measures included priority channels, dialect assistance, and guided escort services. A special commemorative boarding pass service was offered for couples, giving many a unique Chinese New Year souvenir at check-in. For passengers traveling with pets, dedicated check-in procedures ensured a smoother journey.
