On March 6, construction officially began in Haixi Bay, Qingdao West Coast New Area, on Asia's largest self-designed cylindrical Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit.
This offshore equipment combines oil and gas extraction, processing, storage, and offloading into a single, advanced maritime platform.
The new project represents a major milestone in maritime engineering. With a full-load displacement exceeding 170,000 metric tons and a maximum oil storage capacity of 122,000 cubic meters, the unit's hull weight and deck outer diameter both rank first globally among similar equipment.
Compared to previous designs, the cylindrical FPSO offers better space utilization and storage efficiency, providing a distinct operational advantage in the challenging conditions of deep-sea energy exploration.
Technical innovation is central to this development. The unit is built to a high standard, enabling it to remain at sea for 30 years without dry-docking. The project successfully addressed complex design and installation challenges linked to large-scale deep-water cylindrical structures. Additionally, it incorporates over 10 types of domestically produced key equipment for their first large-scale application and features 15 new intelligent functional modules.
Once completed, the vessel will be the largest, most powerful, and most intelligent cylindrical FPSO in Asia.
