Qingdao's Zhongshan Road, which began in 1898, is more than just a street — it is the city's story crafted in brick and mortar.
Once the main commercial center of North China, it was home to major banks and iconic time-honored brands like Hengdeli Watch and Refosian custom tailors. The street's architectural significance is notable, with over 100 protected heritage sites that combine European elegance with Sino-Western courtyard houses.
Zhongshan Road is dotted with historic buildings. Its southern section features European-style structures, while the northern part is lined with Liyuan courtyard houses, a mix of Chinese and Western architectural styles. The Zhongshan Road subdistrict alone has 102 registered immovable cultural relics. Over the past century, Zhongshan Road has become an art corridor that shows the blend of Eastern and Western architecture.
Since 2022, an urban renewal effort has revitalized the area. Staying true to the principle of "restoring the old as it was," Shinan district in Qingdao has avoided a museum-like preservation. Instead, it fosters a lively mix where century-old courtyards now host trendy boutiques, coffee shops, and talk show stages in historic courtyards.
Today, Zhongshan Road draws visitors through ongoing innovation. The Shangjieli festival series fills its calendar all year. Time-honored brands have returned, offering traditional recipes to new generations. Historic spaces have been transformed into theaters and cultural venues, allowing visitors to step into history.
By integrating culture, tourism, and commerce, Zhongshan Road has transformed from a historical witness into a lively stage where the past and present merge to shape Qingdao's future.
