Under the early winter sun, the surface of Chanzhi Reservoir in Qingdao's Laixi shimmers. It is surrounded by lush greenery, alive with fish and shrimp among swaying reeds, while egrets and birds flit through the air. Nearby, cycling paths echo with the laughter of riders.

After years of coordinated water and shoreline management and ecological restoration, the largest reservoir in the Jiaodong Peninsula has not only become a striking ecological landscape but has also forged a path of high-quality development — beautiful ecology, revitalized countryside, and prosperous communities. This year, it was selected as a model for the second batch of provincial-level "Beautiful Rivers and Lakes" in Shandong.

This success is one of many in Qingdao, which has earned multiple national and provincial titles for its beautiful and thriving waterways. Together, they reflect the city's achievements in protecting and restoring its water bodies.

Behind the beauty of these lakes and rivers lies extensive, science-based effort. Focusing on the broader goals of ecological progress, Qingdao has centered its strategy on improving water quality, balancing water resource use, ecological conservation, and pollution control. Each river is treated with tailored measures, leading to improvement in water ecology — clear waters, flowing rivers, green banks, scenic views, and harmony between people and nature.
