As a key northern gateway for international exchange, Qingdao has used sister-city relationships to support national diplomatic strategies and fuel local high-quality development over the past years.

Since establishing its first friendship city with Japan's Shimonoseki in 1979, Qingdao has consistently strengthened economic ties and fostered mutual understanding.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), Qingdao added 15 international sister cities, expanding its network to 95 cities across 54 countries and establishing a multidimensional global presence. This circle of friends has become a vital channel for Qingdao's international engagement.

Qingdao has increased efforts to build regional and thematic cooperation networks. It has deepened ties with Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states, marked by a landmark partnership with Samarkand, Uzbekistan, in the presence of both nations' leaders, and has strengthened cooperation with Japan and South Korea.

Additionally, the city has expanded its partnerships with Global South countries, focusing on Africa and Pacific Island nations through port collaboration and marine sustainability projects.

These partnerships yield tangible outcomes. Through nearly 200 trade and cultural matchmaking events, Qingdao has facilitated the launch of international logistics routes and attracted high-quality foreign investments. Cultural and sports exchanges, including sailing and youth football, have enriched personal bonds. By innovating management mechanisms and prioritizing youth engagement, Qingdao ensures the sustainability of its international friendships, writing a vibrant chapter of global cooperation.
