A new round of restructuring of key laboratories is injecting robust impetus into high-quality development across China. Statistics show that Qingdao is currently home to 17 state-level key laboratories. As a result, Qingdao is working faster to cultivate new quality productive forces by highlighting oceanic features and becoming oriented towards industrial demand.

These laboratories, which are almost evenly split between institutions of higher learning and enterprises, involve many key fields such as marine science and technology, advanced manufacturing, biological medicine and new materials. Below are a few examples. The State Key Laboratory of Mariculture Breeding and Sustainable Output, which is affiliated to the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, specializes in exploration of marine biological germplasm resources and innovation in breeding technology. Haier Group’s State Key Laboratory of Large-scale Customization System and Technology is characterized by in-depth integration of smart products and intelligent manufacturing, and spearheads the transition towards high-end, intelligent and green manufacturing in household appliance. The State Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology under Shandong University is taking a holistic approach towards new-generation gene editing technology, intelligent enzyme engineering technology, and high-quality strain breeding and industrialization.
