China recently decided to significantly relax its visa-free transit policy, extending the period of stay for foreign travelers from 72 or 144 hours to 240 hours (10 days). Eligible travelers from 54 countries and regions including Russia, Brazil, Britain, the USA and Canada can go to a third country or region via Qingdao without applying for visas and can stay in designated areas for no more than 240 hours.

Previously, the 144-hour transit visa-free policy was adopted in Qingdao. The policy has contributed enormously to the growth of foreign travelers coming to Qingdao. Data from the Qingdao Airport Frontier Inspection Station show that the number of border entries and exits via Qingdao Airport from January 1 to 17 p.m. of December 17 reached more than 2.76 million, surging 96.48% from the year earlier. Among them, over 330,000 foreign passengers entered China, soaring 106.66% year on year, with South Korea, Japan, the USA, Singapore, Australia becoming the top five sources of foreign passengers.

Furthermore, the policy adjustment is remark in that cross-regional travel is permitted. In other words, foreigners who are covered by the new transit visa-free policy are allowed to travel across provinces in designated areas that span 24 China’s provinces, regions and municipalities.  (Liang Chao)
