Over more than a year since the inception of the waste-free city initiative, Qingdao has finished a combined total of 176 “waste-free cells”, and “waste-free industry parks”, “waste-free factories” and “waste-free public institutions” are emerging in an endless stream. Qingdao is home to a total of 54 national green factories and has seen the construction of 130 million square meters of green buildings.

In industry, with the building of “waste-free factories”, hazardous waste has reduced by over 30%, the rate of comprehensive utilization for general industrial solid waste and hazardous waste has surpassed 99% and reached 30%, respectively. In the life sector, 904 routes for domestic waste classification, collection and transportation have been put up, and all household wastes are subject to harmless disposal. In the construction sector, all new civil buildings conform to green standards, and 73.8% of construction waste has been recycled as resources. In the maritime sector, 36 port companies have signed the shipboard oily water handling agreement, and Qianwan Port Company and the full automated container terminal of Qingdao Port have been honored with the title of “Four-starred Green Port” and “Five-starred Green Port”, respectively.

Qingdao plans to finish building no fewer than 500 “waste-free cells”, and launch a “Qingdao model” for the waste-free city initiative before the end of this year. (Wu Shuai)
