"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" tops North American box office for 3rd straight weekend 2023/4/24 source: Print

LOS ANGELES, April 23 (Xinhua) -- "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," an animated film based on Nintendo's Mario video game franchise, stayed atop the North American box office chart with an estimated three-day cume of 58.23 million U.S. dollars during its third weekend of release, data from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.

The film from Nintendo and Illumination, being released worldwide by Universal Pictures, has grossed 434.3 million dollars in North America, bringing the global cume to an estimated 871.8 million dollars through Sunday.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" features an all-star voice cast, including Chris Pratt as Mario.

"Evil Dead Rise", a supernatural horror film distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, secured the second place of the box office chart with a revenue of 23.5 million dollars during its debut this weekend.

Rounding out the top three, another newcomer, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's release of the war film "Guy Ritchie's The Covenant," earned 6.28 million dollars during its opening weekend.
